Koya NKP Muthu is the only surrealist among the contemporary Indian painters with the sole exception of Bikash Bhattacharya who is no more active. However, Koya does not contextual himself in the given European stream of post world war Surrealism, which followed a manifesto of intellectual and aesthetic rebellion against the system, preferring to see his own surrealism as prompted by rebellious psyche.
